Building your own home, exactly the way you want it, is a fantasy of many.  In reality, handling the project to completion is a daunting task.  Choosing your contractors for the project can be stressful.  Finding the right builder is one of the essential steps that will pay of in the months and years to come.  Here are some tips that experts say can help with your search.

Start by visiting a lumber yard or building supply stores and ask for the name of local contractors or building companies.  Most will remember who are the personable, or organized in their buying, or prompt with the bills, or have solid reputation in town.  They are usually careful about their recommendations because they rely on future loyal and happy customers.  Also ask plumbers and electricians, they come in contact with many more contractors than the average home owner ever will.  Take advantage of their experience and insights.

Do research to get to know your contractor.  Talking to past clients, visit past works, go to see current actual sites, and ask about the company’s history.

If your inquiries point to a contractor who is not available to do the work right away, you might just be patient.  The good ones are always busy and worth the wait.

Always get at least three estimates and be careful that all the bids includes all necessary taxes.

Negotiate with the contractors and set up a fair payment schedule that will keep them working until the project is finished.

Check for insurance and warranties.  A warranty guarantees the quality and dependability of the service.  Your contractor should be able to provide you with a certificate of insurance.
